Prawn Thokku is a simple thick Prawn gravy/Masala recipe. Prawn is one of our family recipes inherited from my mother. About my mom, I have already mentioned in my previous blog. Amma’s(mother) recipes are just made with basic ingredients but taste heavenly. We make Prawn thokku often in our family because the masala is delicious and satisfying.
Prawn thokku is between semi gravy and dry masala. It looks similar to prawn Roast but, has a different flavor. Prawn roast is really dry dish it can only be served as sides with rice or roti. Check out the Kerala prawn roast. Coming to prawn thokku, I have made it in Tamil Nadu Style which is simply using sesame oil, loads of curry leaves, heirloom tomato and a touch of pepper in the End.
Ingredients:
- 350 grams Prawn
- 300 grams onion
- 150 grams tomato
- 3 TBSP of sesame oil
- 1.5 Tsp ginger paste
- 1.5 TSP garlic paste
- 3/4 to 1 tsp of salt
- 1/2 tsp of chilli
- 3/4 tsp of coriander
- 3/4 tsp of pepper powder
- 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder
- 3- cloves
- 1 – cinnamon stick(2 inch)
- 2 – green cardamom
- 10 – curry leaves
Procedure:
1. In a pan add the oil and whole spices and then, heat the oil. Let the oil get nice and hot.
2. When the oil is hot enough, add the curry leaves and, fry the onion until golden. Season the onion with some salt.
3. Add the coriander leaves and garlic paste, saute for 1 to 2 minute or until the raw smell of garlic is gone. Repeat the same for ginger paste.
4. Saute the tomato until tomatoes become juicy and soft, add some salt to the tomatoes.
5. Add in the dry spice powders, mix everything for 30 seconds. Then, add the prawn and saute for 2 minutes.
6. After 2 minutes, reduce the heat to medium-low and cover the pan with a lid. Let the prawn cook for 6 minutes. In between, open the pan once and mix well.
7. Once the prawn is cooked, Open the lid, add the rest of black pepper powder and mix Prawn Thokku for 30 seconds. Prawn Thokku is ready.
Serve the Prawn thokku with plain rice/sambhar rice/rasam rice. It can also be served with chapati and dosa as well.
