Tomato rice is a South Indian one-pot rice delicacy. Like the name, the main ingredient is the tomato. There are multiple versions of tomato rice, today I am going to share my mother’s recipe. I like to use Bangalore tomatoes( Roma tomatoes) for Tomato base recipes. This version is one easiest Tomato rice recipe and the ingredients, are very basic.
In Tamil, we call it Thakkali sadam and in Karnataka, people call it Tomato bath/thakkali bath. Thakkali sadam is a perfect lunchbox food, especially for picnics. I usually serve this Thakkali sadam with Masala vadai or beetroot vadai or seppankizhangu roast. Please check the recipe for traditional Chettinad beetroot vadai recipe.
